Frequently Asked Questions

Q.What makes you different than other Brazilian Jiu Jitsu clubs in the area ?

A. Many Brazilian Jiu Jitsu clubs focus solely on using the art to win tournaments, competing against other practitioners of the art, who are the same belt level / weight class etc. Here at Gracie Jiu Jitsu Marple we focus on using the art as a form of self defence against a BIGGER STRONGER opponent in a real conflict.

Q. I have never done martial arts before. Will I be able to do it ?

A. Yes ! With our help and regular practice you will be able to reach your goals. Of course, we would not expect somebody who starts training much later in life to be able to physically do what a 21 year old can do. The beauty of Gracie Jiu Jitsu is that it was designed for everybody, regardless of physical attributes such as size, strength, or athleticism. Instead, our techniques are based on leverage, timing and natural body movements.

Q.It looks dangerous. Will I get injured ?

A. Whilst accidents can happen in any sporting activity, our emphasis here at Gracie Jiu Jitsu Marple is safe practice for everyone. If you follow our instructions and practice as prescribed, you should not get injured at all. In fact, we adhere to the “Keep It Playful” philosophy developed by Ryron Gracie. His vision is that by training in a safe and playful manner, people will be able to train until they are 90 years old, just like his Grandfather, Helio Gracie.

Q. Are you an MMA (Mixed Martial Arts) Club ?

A.No, not specifically. Although The Gracie family did CREATE THE UFC that you see on TV today, we are not a mixed martial arts club. However, if you are a beginner looking to get into training MMA we can definitely help. We teach Gracie Jiu Jitsu as a COMPLETE SYSTEM. The skills that you develop in our Gracie Combatives class will transfer well to MMA. You will learn the ESSENTIAL techniques that you absolutely MUST know if you want to enter the cage ! Beyond Gracie Combatives, the MASTER CYCLE will teach you the complete and original Gracie Jiu Jitsu system, including the use of elbows, knees, and strikes, as well as most of the techniques you will find in other BJJ schools. However, the majority of our members do not compete, they simply train for self defence, a good workout, and the enjoyment of training.

Our aim is to provide the average man or woman with the skills to survive a physical attack on the street, and defend themselves with the original Brazilian Jiu Jitsu techniques developed by Helio Gracie.
